AAA New Jersey Automobile Club

AAA New Jersey Car Care Center of SpringfieldFounded in 1900, the New Jersey Automobile Club was one of the nine original motor clubs that merged in 1902 to form the American Automobile Association (AAA).  Today, AAA is synonymous with roadside assistance, a benefit that wasn’t offered when the organization was founded.  In fact, it was the fight for better roads that drew this first group of motorists together.

In its infancy, the New Jersey Automobile Club was as much a social club as a service organization.  Each of the Club’s first five headquarters buildings (located in Newark and East Orange) had a dining room, which was the center of Club activities.  Members met frequently at the tables to discuss their touring experiences and to recount early-day trials and tribulations.  Out of these informal sessions, many of the services AAA offers today – touring information, road maps, emergency road service and hotel reservations – were born.

AAA continues to work as an advocate for its 51 million members, consistently monitoring and responding to legislative issues that pertain to motorists’ rights, as well as the safety of drivers, passengers and pedestrians.
